Residential Scaffolding for Exterior Maintenance in Henley-on-Thames

A Property That Called for a Tailored Approach

ROAR Scaffolding was asked to provide access solutions for external painting, decorating and maintenance work at this period red-brick property in Henley-on-Thames.

Access at the front of the property was reasonable, but the shape of the house called for a more tailored approach. It has several elevations, varying roof heights, projecting windows, a decorative gable and lower sections at the rear. The mature garden also left limited space in which to position the scaffold without unnecessarily disturbing the planting or restricting access around the property.

Working Lifts Planned Around the Building's Features

Our team planned the scaffold around these features. Boarded working lifts were installed at carefully selected heights, giving the maintenance contractors practical access to the brickwork, windows, soffits, fascias, roofline and decorative detailing.

Spanning the Rear with Aluminium Lattice Beams

The rear of the house required further consideration. Lower roof sections and other obstacles meant that scaffold standards could not be placed directly beneath every working platform. We used aluminium lattice beams to span these areas and support the boarded lift above, creating the access required without loading unsuitable surfaces or overcrowding the restricted areas below.

Working Around an Established Garden

The scaffold also needed to be positioned around established shrubs, trees and planted borders. Standards and returns were carefully placed to make the best use of the available ground space while maintaining suitable and secure access across the different elevations.

The Result

Once completed, the scaffold provided the painting and maintenance team with a safe, stable working area around the exterior of the property, including the higher gable and the less accessible sections at the rear.

This Henley-on-Thames project shows the level of planning that can be required when scaffolding older residential properties. Changes in roof height, projecting windows, lower roof sections and established gardens can all affect how the scaffold needs to be built. Assessing the property beforehand allowed us to design an access solution around the building, its surroundings and the work being carried out.
