Commercial Scaffolding in a Live Nursery Environment, Newbury
A tube-and-fitting scaffold built around a working nursery, with protective foam, pink debris netting and controlled ladder access keeping children, staff and visitors safe throughout.
Scaffolding a Live Nursery Environment
ROAR Scaffolding was appointed by Newbury Gardens Day Nursery to provide access for planned external maintenance work at its nursery in Newbury.
Because the nursery remained operational, the scaffold had to be planned around more than the building itself. Children, staff and visitors continued to use the premises, including the outdoor play area where part of the scaffold was positioned.
Built Around the Working Nursery
Our team erected a tube-and-fitting scaffold with multiple boarded working lifts, edge protection, debris netting and controlled ladder access. The layout was planned around the nursery's doors, play equipment and external routes, while still giving contractors practical access to the windows, exterior walls, eaves and roofline.
Protecting the Play Area
Attention was given to the standards positioned within the outdoor play area. High-visibility protective foam was fitted around exposed sections at ground level, providing cushioning and making them easier to see.
"High-visibility protective foam was fitted around exposed sections at ground level, providing cushioning and making them easier to see" — a small detail that mattered a great deal with children using the space around the scaffold every day.
Pink Debris Netting and Edge Protection
Pink debris netting was installed along the upper working elevation. This helped define the working area and contain small, lightweight debris while also giving the scaffold ROAR's distinctive appearance. Guardrails, intermediate rails and toe boards provided edge protection around the boarded platforms.
Controlled Ladder Access
A designated ladder arrangement gave authorised contractors controlled access to the working lifts. Its position was incorporated into the overall scaffold layout with the nursery's entrances, outdoor routes and activity areas in mind.
Newbury Gardens Day Nursery
This project was carried out at Newbury Gardens Day Nursery, part of the wider nursery group operating across Berkshire.
Behind the Scenes: Erecting the Scaffold
The scaffold was erected in stages around the nursery's normal operating hours, with the outdoor play area and building entrances kept clear and accessible throughout.
The Result
Once completed, the scaffold provided a stable and practical working area for the maintenance team while taking account of the nursery operating around it. The contractors could reach the different parts of the elevation from dedicated platforms without repeatedly moving ladders or other access equipment through the play area.
This Newbury project shows why scaffolding at children's nurseries, schools and other occupied premises requires a more considered, bespoke approach. The people using the building, the routes they follow and the activities taking place nearby all need to be considered alongside the work itself.
