A scaffold built for a couple of painters and some brushes will look very different from one designed to hold pallets of bricks and a small team of labourers. This is why load requirements need to be worked out before the scaffold goes up, not guessed at once it is already in place.

 

Understanding Scaffold Load Classes

In the UK, scaffolding load capacity is generally categorised using standard load classes, which are based on European standard BS EN 12811. These classes set out the safe working load per square metre of platform.

Light duty (Class 1 to 2) Designed for inspection work, light maintenance, and tasks that do not involve heavy materials. Load capacity is typically around 75 to 150kg per square metre.

Medium duty (Class 3) Suitable for general building work such as plastering, painting and pointing, where some materials are stored on the platform. This usually allows for around 200kg per square metre.

Heavy duty (Class 4 to 6) Used for bricklaying, blockwork and other work involving heavier materials stacked on the scaffold. These classes can support anywhere from 300kg up to 600kg per square metre, depending on the specific class.

The right class for your project depends on the type of work being carried out and how much material needs to be stored on the platform at any one time. This is something your scaffolding contractor should assess and confirm before installation, not something to estimate on site.

 

What Affects How Much Weight a Scaffold Can Hold?

A number of factors influence the safe working load of a scaffold, including:

Design and materials The type of scaffold system used, whether that is tube and fitting or system scaffolding, affects how loads are distributed and how much weight the structure can handle.

Ground conditions Scaffolding needs a solid, level base to distribute weight evenly. Soft or uneven ground can reduce load capacity and create instability, regardless of how strong the scaffold itself is.

Bracing and ties Proper bracing and wall ties add rigidity to the structure and help it cope with both vertical loads and lateral forces like wind. Missing or inadequate ties are a common cause of reduced capacity.

Platform width and boarding The number of boards and how they are laid affects both the usable working area and how weight is spread across the platform.

Number of people and materials on the platform at once Even a scaffold rated for a certain load class can be overloaded if too many workers, tools and materials are on the same section at the same time. Loads need to be spread out and managed throughout the job, not just accounted for at the design stage.

Height and exposure Taller scaffolds, or those on exposed sites, need to account for additional wind loading, which can affect the overall design and bracing requirements.

 

Why Overloading Scaffolding Is So Dangerous

Overloading is one of the leading causes of scaffold failure. When a scaffold is asked to carry more weight than it was designed for, the risk of collapse increases significantly, along with the risk of individual boards or components failing under pressure.

This is not just a safety issue. An incident on a commercial or domestic site can lead to serious injury, project delays, and significant legal and financial consequences for whoever commissioned the work. Getting the load capacity right from the start is far cheaper and safer than dealing with the aftermath of a failure.

 

How Scaffolding Load Capacity Is Kept Safe

A properly managed scaffold is not a one off calculation. It should be:

  • Designed for the specific job, taking into account the type of work, materials and number of workers involved
  • Erected by a qualified, experienced team following current safety standards
  • Inspected regularly throughout the project to check it remains safe and has not been altered or overloaded
  • Clearly labelled with its load class, so everyone on site knows what it is rated to carry
